The Apple Store is a huge factor now, I hated being on the phone with Dell, knowing that the motherboard or power supply had died and having to fight my way thru layers of idiots, asking me to re-install Windows until I could finally talk to somebody and then being told that the part is backordered and it will be about 15 days before they can get me a replacement.

Got an appointment the next day, and the store repaired without any hassle. Had another iMac fry it's power supply 5 days outside of AppleCare, called first and was nice on the phone. Had an old 12' powerbook, that had the mobo die 3 times, each time they replaced it without a question, when the display went out, they gave me a new 14' powerbook and transferred everything over. When my wife's iMac's HD crapped out, I made an appointment for that morning, dropped it off, and 30 minutes later, was going home with the iMac a new, larger drive and all the data copied over. You can usually find a better deal on AppleCare if you do some searching. If you only have one machine, then maybe Apple sending you a box with overnight shipping prepaid label to have it repaired makes more sense. It might be to wait for Apple to announce a recall, for a new refurbish sale to happen to completely replace it, or for me to find a repair shop and mail the laptop in. In my case, if my new MBA breaks, I can go without it and use my personal MBP as my backup for a bit. If you're clueless then getting Applecare may make more sense.Р”Р€) Your ability to cope without this specific machine. I found with my MBP that was out of warranty, I was able to fix the trackpad, trackpad connector, and battery, all myself. If it's the same price for a $1k machine as it is for a $3k machine, then it makes much more sense to get it for the more expensive machine.Р”Сћ) Your technical ability to do basic things yourself like replacing the battery. That's my personal situation (well, 'business' situation ) and my question to the group is, when do you find Applecare worth it?Р”РЋ) Relative cost of Applecare versus cost of the machine. So if it breaks, replacing it makes more sense than repairing it and prepaying $300 for Apple care (or whatever it is) on a $1k machine seems wasteful. Really, a $1k 2014 MBA will be $600 in 2 years, refurbished. That seems silly and unfair meaning I shouldn't get it for a $1k MBA. My concern is I believe Applecare is the same price for a $1k MBA as it is for a $3k MBP or at least it was when I looked at it a few years ago. Then again, if I don't get Applecare and I have to pay out of pocket for the repairs, those repairs would be 50% off too (also business expenses). Since it's business and I can deduct the costs of it against my business income, I'm considering Applecare because in essence, it's 50% off because of the tax breaks. It will be a business deduction because it will be a business machine and I'll keep my existing MBP for personal use. I plan to buy a new MBA this year if they finally come out with Retina.
